Goalie pants are always recommended as they are padded to give the goalie maximum protection. The pucks in ice and inline hockey are hard and can hurt without proper padding.
For inline skates, recreational roller hockey goalies should look for boots that are low cut to allow them greater mobility. Because goalies get more pucks shot at them, the boot should have a hard, protective outer layer. Also, these skates do not have a brake, and roller hockey goalies need to learn how to stop differently. Also, the chassis should be made of metal, rather than from plastic, like most inline skates.
